Stringing the Tightrope

Most recently, as issues start to reverberate in the headlines of the local papers, it seems almost definite that the need to explain has turned to be a positive duty.

Regurgitating the information I've tried to keep in mind, there's been a public outcry regarding the unexpected early exit of some foreign university. This uproar has kept the desultory media attention up close on us for once. I'm just wondering, in the Asian context, if you can't keep one here, where else can you possibly do it?

It's not like we have a state known to rake in our own cuts of profits - via tax and pay hikes.
It's not like we don't welcome future candidates for the Silicon Valley with open arms - with more than an iota of discrimination.
It's not like we don't recognize a social imperative to the rest of the world - with internal charitable scandals.
It's not like we have an issue with decriminalizing of controversial laws - since god knows when.

It's not like, it's no wonder.

The heart of the matter has been identified by the decision-makers as the lower-than-anticipated enrollments, which make operation unsustainable. Well, outta the 710 applicants, only 150 has been taken in. Mixed signals are being sent, I suppose. Such a figure reminds me badly of another comparable institution though.

I hope this dysfunctional battle between the students, university and the media, does not take place in this institution I'm reminded of. Nobody wants to get hurt this summer just yet.
