the two-sided game

uncle quek comes home one day, claiming to his live-in partner, auntie ching, "i gave myself a pay rise."

before anyone gets to say anything, uncle quek drives everyone out for a celebration as though he has just owned everything. the next part of the happy news comes somewhat subtly. oil prices, food prices, drink prices have gone up. uncle quek drives everyone home. now, no one, said nothing.

well uncle quek should have allowed someone to say something. i for that matter could have been contributory in keeping his spirits high for just that one day.

not all flash figures have been adjusted for inflation. like not all good news come without bad news on the flip side. figures can be puffed up merely as a result of rising prices. like good results can be puffed up merely due to rising expectations.

before we make merry over good news, think of those who're getting the bad news.

somebody must have taken care of uncle quek's pay rise. i'll find that somebody. and perhaps be that somebody, someday.
